住吉のカジュマル
A tall evergreen tree in the Morcaeae family. Tanegashima is the northern limit for this tree. It produces many aerial roots from its trunk and branches. This provides a beautiful sight. It grows mainly on the Nansei Islands, Okinawa, Taiwan and the tropics. It is said that the banyan trees of Sumiyoshi were transplanted here from Okinawa to serve as a windbreak, tide protection and seawall in the early Meiji period (1868 to 1912).
